About Us

Our Story

A man named Edwin Hickman, explorer and surveyer, came to this area leading a survey party in April of 1791. He was later killed in an Indian attack at Defeated Creek. Time passed and the county was officially established in December of 1807 by the Tennessee General Assembly. Robert Weakley, a member of Hickman’s surveying party, proposed for the new county name to be made in honor of Edwin Hickman. Years later in 1994, the Hickman County Historical Society placed a monument at Hickman’s grave. People in the community can stop and pay their respects to the man who started it all.

Even from its beginning, our county was rich in valuable stories and distinctive culture that would be talked about for years to come. Hickman is packed full of interesting details and there is much more than what meets the eye. Our culture dates back hundreds of years and plays a big part in what makes us special.
